How to Root and Install CWM on Moto E Android 4.4

Motorola Moto E has made a great success in India, even better than it predecessor, Moto G. Being the younger brother of Moto G, it equipped with slightly lower specification such as the down-size of 4.3″ display, 4GB internal storage and slower processor of dual core 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200.

However, being priced at $129 without contract, Moto E make a deal to get your first hand-on Android experience. If it is the case you experience unpleasant lag issue on Moto E, perhaps its time to debloat unwanted built-in application. You can easily do so by root Moto E.

How To Root Moto E and Install CWM Recovery

Pre-requisites & Requirements

  1. Motorola Moto E (Ensure correct device model and firmware; Check device model – Go to Settings -> About Device -> Model Number)
  2. Windows-based computer or laptop
  3. Download Motorola Moto E USB driver for Windows and install in your computer.
  4. Connect device to computer with USB cable to complete installation.
  5. Skip this step if you have installed the USB driver.
  6. Enable USB Debugging on your device. How to Enable USB Debugging Mode on Android Devices.
  7. Make sure your phone is charged to 60% 80% to avoid battery blackout and interruption during this tutorial.
  8. We recommend you make a backup on your data and media files before the tutorial. You may restore the data and files if necessary.

Reminder: Unlock bootloader will erase all the device data. Make a full backup before you proceed.

Instructions

  1. Download all necessary files above.
  2. Extract mfastboot and use that for unlock bootloader of Moto E. Follow this guide.
  3. Rename the download TWRP recovery to recovery-twrp.img. Copy and paste this img file into the extracted folder in Step 2.
  4. Connect your device to PC. Copy and paste the SuperSU file to internal storage of the phone.
  5. Unplug and turn off your device.
  6. Reboot into download mode by pressing and hold Volume Down + Power button.
  7. Now, connect your device to PC via USB cable.
  8. Go to extracted folder, press SHIFT + RIGHT CLICK the folder, then followed by OPEN COMMAND WINDOW HERE.
  9. In the CMD windows, type fastboot flash recovery recovery-twrp.img and press enter to continue.
  10. In TWRP recovery, select INSTALL FROM SDCARD –> SuperSU. 
  11. After install SuperSU, reboot system.
  12. You root Moto E successfully now.
