Install ClockWorkMod Recovery on Nexus 7 2013

We shared a Root guide for Nexus 7 2013 together with custom TWRP recovery installation, and today we going to share another custom recovery option to you on how to install ClockWorkMod Recovery on your Nexus 7 2013. You can either choose to install the non-touch ClockWorkMod Recovery or ClockWorkMod Touch Recovery. Both should works well for your device!! Check out the installation guide.

First of all, I assuming you have a brand new Nexus 7 2013 with bootloader locked. We will tell you from scratch on how to unlock bootloader, install ClockWorkMod Recovery and root your devices. If you have every done but think to switch to ClockWorkMod Recovery, you can simply flash the recovery image file. At the end of the process, you will have your device rooted with either CWM Recovery or CWM Touch Recovery version 6.0.3.7. The recovery works for Nexus 7 2013 running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean official firmware.

Pre-requisites & Requirements

  1. Nexus 7 (Ensure correct device model and firmware; Check device model – Go to Settings -> About Device -> Model Number)
  2. Windows-based computer or laptop
  3. Download Nexus 7 USB driver for Windows and install in your computer. (Installation guide)
  4. Connect device to computer with USB cable to complete installation.
  5. Skip this step if you have installed the USB driver.
  6. Enable USB Debugging on your device. How to Enable USB Debugging Mode on Android Devices.
  7. Make sure your phone is charged to 60% 80% to avoid battery blackout and interruption during this tutorial.
  8. We recommend you make a backup on your data and media files before the tutorial. You may restore the data and files if necessary.

Instructions: How To Install ClockWorkMod Recovery On Nexus 7 2013

  1. Once you have completed bootloader unlock, you can proceed to flash custom CWM recovery.
  2. Download either touch or non-touch CWM recovery in a folder in computer.
  3. Rename the image file to recovery.img. 
  4. Copy recovery.img into the root of the folder C:\Fastboot. [Ensure you have setup android SDK]
  5. Goto Windows Start button –> Type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
  6. Type cd C:\fastboot in the command prompt windows.
  7. Boot up your device into Bootloader Mode by press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power button until Fastboot menu and Start appeared.
  8. Press Volume Up button for several times until Recovery Mode appears on the screen. Press Power button to confirm.
  9. Connect your devices to computer.
  10. Type fastboot flash recovery recovery.img in the command prompt windows.
  11. TWRP recovery will be flashed to device.
  12. Wait couple of minutes and observe the process.
  13. Now, you have TWRP recovery installed in your device.

Instructions: How To Root Nexus 7 2013 Android 4.3

  1. Download SuperSU package into your device.
  2. Power off your device.
  3. Boot up your device into Bootloader Mode by press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power button until Fastboot menu and Start appeared.
  4. Press Volume Up button for several times until Recovery Mode appears on the screen. Press Power button to confirm.
  5. You should see custom CWM recovery.
  6. In CWM main menu, select Install zip from sdcard and locate & select UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.43.zip.
  7. Click Yes to flash the zip.
  8. Back to recovery main menu and select Reboot System now.
  9. To check whether you have root access, download root checker below to test.
  10. Enjoy your rooted Nexus 7 2013.
